His latest is the 2018 “Voice.” Rush was not the prolific songwriter back then, more of a song interpreter so his star never rose as high as Dylan’s or Ochs’. He also carried less of the “angry man” folk protester pose than many of his contemporaries did. After the original Barre City Hall/Barre Opera House building, built only twelve years before, was destroyed by fire in 1898, the current building was erected on the same site. The new Opera House, considered the finest in Vermont, seated 1,000 patrons and opened on August 23, 1899. With significant community support, a dilapidated Barre Opera House re-opened in October 1982. The facility was in an advanced state of disrepair; windows were broken, few seats were left, and the outdated heating system did not function.

He helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s and the renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists. Rush was a student at Harvard when he started performing and recording in the early 1960s. He was an early contributor to the folk scene in Boston and New York and as such was a contemporary of such luminaries as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Richie Havens and Joan Baez. He was one of those riding the early wave of urban folk music, and became a fixture in the Boston folk music establishment. During the Great Depression and World War II, the opera house served the community primarily as a movie house.

These and several other performers from the height of Motown’s most popular musical decade may not be coming to Barre in person, but a show that highlights these very popular entertainers and their hit songs is on its way. The BOH currently requires either proof of vaccination or a printed copy of a negative COVID-19 test result obtained within 72 hours (three days) of the show date and masking at all times within the building. He’s 80 but his photos reveal a younger looking man with a full head of white hair and his signature bushy mustache. He’s an active entertainer who has booked a full slate of live concerts and has an ongoing streaming show each week. The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion has been the site of unparalleled performances by stunning music luminaries and virtuosos. It was the home of the LA Philharmonic for decades and the site for more than 20 Academy Awards presentations between 1969 and 1999. It has been the home of LA Opera since 1986, sharing its stage with Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center. Public parking is available near the Barre Opera House entrance along Merchants Row. Please do not park in the 24-hour permit parking spaces, these are spaces paid for by residence living in the downtown area. There are 10 stairs that will take you to the mezzanine level, and an additional 19 stairs to reach the balcony level.

This CD contains lots of stage banter and songs that are lighthearted or downright funny. This is pure Tom Rush at his best, showing just how entertaining this performer is. James Taylor told Rolling Stone, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences.” Country music star Garth Brooks has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences.

Shadows of the ’60s: Motown comes to the Barre Opera House

In subsequent years we have added a full service box office, a hearing assistance system and state of the art heating, ventilation and air conditioning. In the summer of 2005, we began a complete overhaul of our theatrical lighting system, beginning with the replacement of our electrical wiring, which was completed in 2006. Starting in the mid-seventies, a groundswell of community interest and support culminated in the re-opening of the Opera House in October of 1982, in spite of the dingy walls, broken windows, lack of proper seats and heating.

And, as the Opera House is accessible to those with physical and hearing disabilities, we serve a large community of people with special needs. Our house contains seating for 645 patrons which includes orchestra level and balcony. The elevator is available from the ground level entrance to the lobby/orchestra level on the 2nd floor. “‘Shadows of the ’60s’ (is) a group of the most talented individuals we recently had the pleasure to work with. They provided an all-around great and most memorable musical tribute of the Motown era hit makers. The dance floor was packed and energized with audience participation,” wrote a concert promoter.

The lawsuit was filed in February, alleging the public funding violated the state Constitution in as many as five different ways and naming the state of Nevada, the governor and the state treasurer as defendants. In the mid- to late-1980s he was a member of the Hall of Fame group, The Drifters, which featured two original members, Charlie Thomas and Elsbeary Hobbs. Revels has toured worldwide and is the lead singer and record arranger/producer for internationally acclaimed a cappella group The Persuasions. Another gem of an album proving how good Rush is live is “Tom Rush Trolling for Owls,” in limited release and found only at his shows.

2008 saw the installation of a brass railing around the perimeter of the orchestra pit, and the replacement of the brass rails in the opera boxes that went missing during the theater’s period of disuse. In 2010, we sound-proofed the theater from the busy downtown street noise by adding interior storm windows. We’re currently illuminating the beautiful balcony stained glass window to make it visible from the outside of the building.

On your next view you will be asked to log in or create an account to continue reading. In addition to this wide variety of patrons, the Opera House provides a much needed performance space for many Vermont arts groups. The Opera House serves as a performance space for The Vermont Philharmonic, The Green Mountain Youth Symphony, Moving Light Dance, Contemporary Dance and Fitness, The Miss Vermont Pageant and many other organizations. In addition, many non-profit organizations use the Opera House for their own fundraisers, public forums and special functions, and they, along with numerous others, benefit from every improvement made to the facility.

The three floor gallery provides visitors an opportunity to see some of the areas talented artists. Today, you can see the lasting mark of the granite industry on the community in the architectural design of many downtown buildings and granite sculptures and memorials. Like many small communities throughout America, Barre boomed until the late 20th century when globalization began to affect, significantly, the local economy. However, in recent years, Barre has benefited from a resurgence of economic activity driven by significant municipal and private redevelopment projects along with an influx of younger entrepreneurs. Barre's housing market and its affordability coupled with being centrally located within the state of Vermont has contributed to further growth. Members of the Barre Opera House receive discounts on Celebration Series and BOH Presents… tickets.

Within a year, the Motown label had its first million-selling record, with the Miracles’ “Shop Around.” By 1969, the label would place dozens of records in the Billboard Top 10 as it reshaped the sound of pop music for a generation. While studio CDs are great to listen to, the proof of a fine performer’s mettle is in live performance. Rush is no stranger to Vermont audiences and venues, and we’ve praised him in the past giving him the sobriquet “New England’s Folk Singer.” The New Hampshire native, a Harvard graduate, has also lived in Massachusetts and Vermont. There are few performers worthy of the title “legendary” but Rush, who has been performing and recording since 1962 certainly has earned that title as well.
